socks: Socks

We will be using approximately 400 yards of sock yarn.  It is helpful if you look at various sock patterns to get an idea what you are hoping to accomplish.  Most of the creativity in socks comes from the top of the sock to the heel.  You can use different colors or patterns to make your socks a little more creative.  The level of creativity will be determined by your experience as a knitter.  We will provide a standard pattern or you can search through patterns on ravelry or in the shop for more ideas.

We usually suggest size 2 or size 3 needles in 16 inch or 24 inch length.  You may also wish to knit with a single long needle in  a method called magic loop.  You will determine your preference and your knitting gauge.

The class will meet for three sessions.  The first session is organizational.  We can select your yarn, check your gauge, and get started with knitting-in-the-round with two circular needles.

The second class involves the heel, turning the heel and picking up the stitches along the side of the heel for the gusset.  This class will be the longest of all: 3 hours.

The third class will be working on the toe of the sock. . . . and then we will need to start the second sock.

This is quite a process.  Some students love it, others say they never want to make a sock again.  If your love is big afghans you will probably not enjoy the small needles required for socks.  If you just love learning new things, you should enjoy this class.  Certainly my children enjoy their birthday socks.
